Am a forty-two year old, mother of three, who decided several years ago to finish her college degree. I attended Holy Family College twenty-four years ago with the intention of becoming a registered nurse. After leaving college at the end of my sophomore year, I married and had three children. As my youngest child was about to enter school, I began to re-evaluate my career goals.
I had some experience in the classroom as a substitute teacher and later as a classroom teacher in parochial school and realized I enjoyed working with children and had a natural aptitude for teaching. These realizations led me back to Holy Family College to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Through the course of my studies at Holy Family College, I have been able do my Practicum teaching in a Kindergarten class in Edgewater Park, New Jersey, and in a third grade class in a demonstration school in Philadelphia, PA. I have also completed my student teaching experience in a fourth grade class in Cherry Hill, NJ. My student teaching experience has allowed me to create websites for the students to learn how to use and maintain. I have been very excited to see the students grow and learn as a result of my teaching. This training has also allowed me to participate in parent-teacher conferences and gain experience communicating with parents about their children. All of these experiences have helped me grow as person and as a teacher. I feel I have developed many good skills and practices that will insure my success as a classroom teacher.
I cannot discount my experience as a mother of three children, ages 10, 12, and 18. I have found it to be most beneficial to have the parental experience in conjunction with the teaching theory and experience. Being a mother has helped me to communicate with my students better and to develop a rapport with them. I think I have a better understanding of their developmental levels and abilities because of my experience as a mother. Having completed my degree and my teaching experiences, I feel ready to take on my own classroom and guide the students into the 21st century.
