My philosophy of education is based on several important goals. The most important of these goals, to me, is to encourage my students to think critically and learn problem-solving skills. I think these tools will be invaluable to them in the future. I also believe it is fundamental to encourage my students' self-confidence so that they will feel free to voice their opinions and ideas. Another one of my goals is to encourage my students to dream and to set their own goals for their future. I will have high expectations for all my students and encourage them to reach for the stars.
In order to create an environment of respect and rapport in my classroom I believe it is essential for me to treat my students with respect and model respect with my peers and co-workers. I think it is important for my students to know that I am committed to them and be someone they can trust to follow through. I think it is important to really listen to what my students have to say and to give them my full attention when they need me. I think that my behavior will be a model for them to understand that I will not tolerate disrespect in my classroom. They will understand by my actions and by my words that we will all treat each other with human kindness and respect.
I will establish a culture for learning in my classroom by giving well defined, clear expectations. I will strive to create lessons that are interesting and filled with hands - on activities. I will give immediate feedback whenever possible and praise all sincere efforts. I expect my students to always work hard and do their very best. I will remind them of the values of hard work and make sure to show them that I value their efforts. I will do this by displaying their work, allowing them to share their ideas with the class, and sending home notes to parents about their efforts and diligence.
I will manage my classroom procedures by spending as much time as necessary in the beginning of the year to establish the routines and procedures that will make my classroom run smoothly. I will use simple verbal instruction, reinforced by visual reminders, to direct my students' behavior during potential problem times, such as transitions and instructional groups. I will include my non-instructional duties on the daily classroom schedule as a model of good organizational skills. I will determine my volunteers' and paraprofessionals' strengths and delegate time-consuming duties to the appropriate person whenever possible.
I believe that by involving the students in the determination of rules in my classroom I will help them to control their own behavior. I believe that spending more time reinforcing good behavior reduces the time needed for correcting bad behavior. I believe that incentives and rewards give students some motivation for learning to control themselves. I do, however, believe that students need to know the consequences of their decision not to follow the rules. I also believe that the consequences must be meaningful and logical.
The physical aspect of my classroom is very important to me. I would like to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that is conducive to learning and comfortable to work in. I will encourage my students to help to create this atmosphere, thereby developing their sense of ownership and pride in our classroom. I have chosen teaching as my career because I want to make a difference in the lives of children. I want to be both guide and mentor to students and help them make their goals and dreams become reality by giving them the tools they need to succeed in the future.
